Iris Skincare
February- April 2024
Iris Skincare is the product of my Design Degree Capstone. I wanted to explore packaging, branding, and web design by creating a concept for a skincare brand specifically aimed at the growing number of young girls that want to take care of their skin but may not have access to the right products.
Ideation
I began by researching and identifying the specific problem I wanted to solve and the audience I wanted to reach:
Problem: Many preteen and teen girls have an interest in skincare, but end up using harsh ingredients intended for adult skin. Skincare made specifically for younger customers feels out of touch.
Audience: My target audience is girls ages 11-18 who have specific skincare concerns that come with being a teenager and want to begin experimenting with skincare, but struggle to find something effective, affordable, low effort, and also fun to use.
Moodboarding
I used this research to guide my next step, moodboarding. I created three initial directions and based on peer feedback, decided that the second direction best fit my intended audience. I then created a series of color palettes and type options until I narrowed it down to a bright yet clean direction that I felt would connect with my desired demographic.
Brand Book
From there, I expanded my color palette and type treatments into a brand. I created a wordmark and logo and included personal touches like custom drawn doodles and and scalloped edges that felt youthful but not immature.
Application
Once I had my brand solidified, it was time to implement it into packaging, web wireframes, and merchandise.
Packaging
It was important that the packaging feel luxurious, despite my brand’s younger audience, since many young teens in the digital age buy products based on packaging alone. I wanted the product shape to resemble the higher end brands such as Drunk Elephant and Glossier that teens watch influencers use. I also included brand-specific details that would set Iris apart, however, such as a pump that would create a flower shape similar to the logo and a box inset with a scalloped edges.
Website Homepage
Next, I created a wireframe for the homepage of Iris’s website incorpating my brand elements. I first created a lo-fi version and user tested it with my classmates to ensure a smooth user experience. Then, I adapted it into the hi-fi version.
Merchandise
I wanted Iris to be a brand that young girls would want to flaunt through merchandise. I aimed to design a tote bag that was both practical and trendy for the demographic I wanted to reach.
